On Page SEO

On Page SEO is the foundation of how SEO works. In the early days of search engines, on page factors like keyword density were the only thing search engines looked for when ranking pages within their index.

Much has changed since then and the most significant innovation that made Google who they are today is PageRank, a formula developed by Larry Page. However, PageRank is an offsite SEO factor so we will concentrate on that later.

The process of optimizing a website on page looks like this:

  • Interview company stakeholders. Understand the brand and the audience.
  • Keyword Research: Develop a list of primary keywords you want to target.
  • Establish SMART goals. Be sure to set a due date on those goals.
  • Utilize Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI). This caters to Google’s conversational search algorithm.
  • Interlink pages to improve user experience.

The other factors one must look at is the content hierarchy:

  • H1 Tag Should Have a Keyword in it and there should only be 1!

  • H2 Tags are subsets of H1 Tags. You can have multiple H2 Tags.

  • H3 Tags would be used if you needed to break down your H2s more.

  • Paragraph text is pretty awesome to. Sometimes it helps when you bold or italicize keywords in your paragraph content.
